WHY
This AI Blueprint lays the foundation for the development of an AI strategy for African countries.
Before this blueprint, a clear strategic and practical framework for the use and governance of such
technologies in Africa, was not articulated or documented.
WHAT
The African continent’s intent is on leveraging the digital transformation process to achieve
sustainable growth and development. One of the main elements of this digitalization thrust relates to
the application of AI technology.
This AI blueprint provides concrete policy recommendations to harness the potential and mitigate the
risk of AI in African countries. It outlines the most relevant opportunities and challenges of the
development and use of AI for Africa. In particular:
• Lessons learnt on AI governance and strategies
• AI strategic framework for Africa
• Governance and Ethics for AI
• AI to real-life –use cases for AI made in Africa for Africa
• Roadmap for AI in continental Africa
IMPACT
AI blueprint is endorsed by South African government and African Countries members of Smart
Africa. It is expected that its implementation will Intensify funding, interest and research on AI, and
offer pragmatic policy options for African countries to accelerate AI adoption. AI has the potential to
double a country’s GDP growth rate by 2035 and due to its various use-cases across sectors, `and the
potential to make a substantial contribution to the achievement of Africa 2063 vision and of several of
the SDGs
